Zam Zam, Jake ! |
![]() |
Nobles All, dig the stage action going down in ol' London Town. Jake Broder, a young, London based, American actor with a jumpin' pedicured resume (he played Amadeus on Broadway in 2001, and sweetened the audience's wig as a member of the Reduced Shakespeare Company) has dialed up His Lordship's number in a new play set to open in London on Jan 29th, 2002. The acting company Les Gendarmes Des Fleures, composed of Broder, Adam Long (founder of the Reduced Shakespeare Company) and performer David Tughan present "Zam Zam Room" a tale of Lord Buckley's free spirited bar room brilliance set against the grinding, grey repression of 1950s America. This swingin' theatrical stomp is supported by the gorgeous riffs of the Sleepytime Jazz Quintet. The show runs three nights Jan 29-31. Baby, be there or be a double Octagonhead!!! Noble cats and kitties, the celebration is on!! Phantom Gallery in Portland, Oregon is inviting all the hipnoscenti to make the scene on Saturday, April 27th to knock up a mad, belated birthday beat for HRH Richard Lord Buckley. By most accounts His Lordship lived at least two lifetimes in his fifty fours years on this sweet swingin’ sphere, so, it ain’t much of a wig stretch to lay out the candles for his 96th. Performances, rare recordings and a video presentation of the trailer for Michael Monteleone’s Buckley documentary “Too Hip For the Room” will highlight this gathering of those that dig the Lord. Make it, Jude!!! Lord Buckley’s 96th Belated Birthday Scene

Hipster Bob? |
![]() |
Those of you cats and kitties that tuned into the article about Lord Buckley on NPR on July 1st already dig that the voice introducing THE VOICE was veteran newscaster and Morning Edition Host Bob Edwards. This last Monday, July 15th, on Morning Edition, Bob read some letters to NPR about various news stories. One such letter was from a New York cat that laid down his Lord Buckley scene in a very hip patois. At first, Prince Bob read it straight, but soon he was caught up in the rhythms and poetry and by the end he was swingin' it up real cool hipsemantic style. There's just something jumpin' about that prose! If you have REAL AUDIO you can listen to Bob reading the Buckley letter by going to the Morning Edition audio area at NPR.org.

Avery Snaps His Last Ray Avery 1920 - 2002 |
![]() |
You've seen his masterful eye on many of Lord Buckley recordings. And you've seen his handywork on countless other jazz albums and in even more publications. Ray Avery, jazz photographer and avid jazz record collector died, suddenly, of a heart attack on Nov. 17, 2002 in Los Angeles. One night in 1956, Avery took his 35mm camera to a small club in Hollywood called The Music Box and witnessed the improbable scene of a Lord Buckley performance. The evening was resplendent with the Royal Family (Lady Elizabeth, Princess Laurie and Prince Richard) in attendance, Milt Hinton's lively jump band, various and sundry members of the Royal Court and an abstract painter working wildly on scenery even as His Lordship held forth.Avery found his way to the foot of the stage and snapped away like a mad dig daddy. The result was three rolls of the most swingin' and jumpin' silver halide the sphere has ever laid it's peepers on. We can thank Ray for the incomparable profile of Lord Buckley on "His Royal Hipness" and for the elegant cover of "The Bad Rapping of the Marquis De Sade" and even for his kind permission to use some of his images at LBC. Ray Avery was a kind, generous and enthusiastic human being. He will be missed in many a quarter. LINKS

Mighty Nice, Daddy-o |
![]() |
Legendary surrealist/political satirist/puppeteer and Buckley affectionado, Paul Zaloom unleashes his latest solo extravaganza, MIGHTY NICE, a work in three parts: "THE PUNCH AND JIMMY SHOW", a gay update of the classic "Punch and Judy"; "DON'T", a mock D.A.R.E anti-drug presentation hosted by an intense state cop and his drug addled, life-sized dummy, Billy; and "2222", a frenetic, apocalyptic, and hysterical sci-fi vision of what the world will be like in the year 2222.Zaloom uses his weapon of choice, humor, to disarm and encourage, to melt the pessimism away, and to hurt the face from way too much laughter. Zaloom recently spoke to LBC at his shows.
